Pirro says MPD statistics were manipulated but decides against pursuing charges
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia, Jeanine Pirro, confirmed that the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) manipulated crime statistics, making crime appear lower than it actually was. However, after investigating nearly 6,000 reports and interviewing over 50 witnesses, her office decided not to pursue criminal charges, stating that the conduct did not meet the threshold for prosecution. This inquiry followed a house Oversight Committee interim report accusing MPD Chief Pamela Smith of fostering a toxic management culture and altering crime data. Smith announced her resignation effective December 31. Mayor Muriel Bowser defended Smith and highlighted the MPDS efforts in reducing crime, citing a 29% drop in violent crime in 2025. Pirro emphasized that the manipulated statistics underscore the effectiveness of President Donald Trump’s crime-reduction initiatives in the district.
Pirro says MPD statistics were manipulated but decides against pursuing charges
U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro confirmed her office found that Washington, D.C.‘s Metropolitan Police Department manipulated its crime statistics, but said the conduct “does not rise to the level of a criminal charge.”
Pirro’s announcement comes after the House Oversight Committee’s report accusing Washington, D.C.’s police chief of manipulating crime statistics. The interim report, based on interviews with eight MPD commanders, concluded that MPD Chief Pamela Smith created a “toxic management culture” and manipulated the statistics to appear lower than they actually were. Smith announced her resignation last week, effective Dec. 31.
The U.S. attorney’s office in Washington began its own investigation into the reporting of the district’s crime statistics in August, reaching its conclusion that many of the crime reports were “misclassified,” Pirro announced Monday afternoon.
“In August 2025, the United States Attorney’s Office in DC began an investigation into MPD’s reported deflation of crime statistics. The need for accurate information to fight crime is essential. After a review of almost 6000 reports and the interview of over 50 witnesses, it is evident that a significant number of reports had been misclassified, making crime appear artificially lower than it was,” Pirro said.
However, Pirro said her office would not be presenting charges related to the investigation. Her office did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment on the decision.
“The conduct here does not rise to the level of a criminal charge. However, it is up to MPD to take steps to internally address these underlying issues,” Pirro said.
Pirro circled back to President Donald Trump’s initiative to combat crime in the district following his move to federalize the MPD and deploy the National Guard to Washington in August.
“The uncovering of these manipulated crime statistics makes clear that President Trump has reduced crime even more than originally thought, since crimes were actually higher than reported. His crime fighting efforts have delivered even more safety to the people of the District,” Pirro said.
Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser, who is not running for reelection, stood by Smith in a Sunday statement to the Washington Examiner following the release of the Oversight Committee’s report.
“The men and women of the Metropolitan Police Department run towards danger every day to reduce homicides, carjackings, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and more. The precipitous decline in crime in our city is attributable to their hard work and dedication and Chief Smith’s leadership,” Bowser said. “I thank Chief Smith for her commitment to the safety of DC residents and for holding the Metropolitan Police Department to an exacting standard, and I expect no less from our next Chief of Police.”
HOUSE OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE SAYS DC POLICE CHIEF ‘UNDERMINED’ ACCURACY OF CRIME DATA
A recent MPD report on 2025’s year-to-date crime statistics shows a 29% drop in violent crime and a 17% drop in total crime across the board compared to 2024.
Bowser reportedly slammed the leaders of the Oversight Committee in a letter following their interim investigation report, blasting it as a “rush to judgement in order to serve a politically motivated timeline,” according to Fox News and the Washington Post.
