Phillips urges Democrats to awaken following Biden’s victory in South Carolina primary
Democratic Candidate Dean Phillips Urges Voters to “Wake Up” After Biden’s South Carolina Win
Democratic presidential candidate Rep. Dean Phillips (MN) is sounding the alarm after President Joe Biden’s decisive victory in the South Carolina primary. Despite finishing in third place behind author Marianne Williamson, Phillips believes his performance should serve as a warning to voters. He argues that former President Donald Trump poses a serious threat in the upcoming November election, citing numerous national and swing state polls that show Trump leading in key battlegrounds.
“I respect Joe Biden. He should have passed the torch,” Phillips stated. “This was not a mission for me. But someone had to do this,” he added, emphasizing the need for the Democratic party to move forward.
The Phillips campaign has accused Biden and his allies of using “suppression tactics” to keep the Minnesota congressman off the ballot in several states, including Wisconsin’s upcoming primary on April 2.
Phillips Fights Back Against Party Critics
Phillips has faced criticism from fellow Democrats who dismissed his efforts to remain on the Wisconsin ballot. In response, he called their rhetoric “irresponsible” and vowed to stay in the race until at least the state’s primary election.
However, Phillips received a small victory when the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled in his favor, allowing his name to appear on the Democratic presidential primary ballot. Prior to the decision, Governor Tony Evers had labeled Phillips’ efforts as ”ridiculous.”
“I gotta tell you that for a Democratic governor to tell Americans, especially the folks in Wisconsin, that putting someone on the ballot is ‘ridiculous?’ I don’t know what else to say,” Phillips expressed in a pre-recorded interview.
Evers, who supports Biden’s reelection, referred to Phillips’ legal challenge as a “distraction.”
The Wisconsin Supreme Court ultimately agreed with Phillips, stating that the local committee has discretion in determining which candidates meet the media standard and should be included on the party’s ballot.
Phillips remains committed to staying in the race until at least after Wisconsin’s primary election on April 2.

Bernie Sanders (VT), Phillips believes that Biden’s win is a wake-up call for voters to unite behind the Democratic frontrunner in order to defeat President Donald Trump in the general election.
Phillips, a first-term congressman representing Minnesota’s 3rd congressional district, has been an advocate for progressive policies and a vocal critic of the Trump administration. He believes that Biden’s victory in South Carolina proves his ability to appeal to a diverse coalition of voters, including African Americans who make up a significant portion of the state’s Democratic electorate.
In a statement released after the South Carolina primary, Phillips commended Biden’s ability to connect with voters and build a broad coalition of support. He emphasized the importance of unity among Democrats and urged his fellow candidates to consider the larger objective of defeating Trump.
“While I may not have been the winner in South Carolina, Joe Biden’s victory sends a clear message to Democrats across the country,” Phillips said. ”Our priority should be defeating Donald Trump and restoring decency and integrity to the White House. We must set aside our differences and unite behind Joe Biden, who has proven that he can appeal to a broad range of voters and build the diverse coalition needed to win in November.”
Phillips also highlighted Biden’s track record of legislative accomplishments and his ability to work across the aisle. He believes that Biden’s experience and proven ability to deliver results make him the best candidate to secure the support needed to defeat Trump.
“We need a candidate who can bring Republicans and Independents to our side, and Joe Biden has demonstrated his ability to do just that throughout his career,” Phillips stated. “He understands the importance of working across party lines to get things done, and he has the track record to prove it. That’s the kind of leadership we need in the White House.”
While Phillips acknowledged the progressive policies and passion of other candidates in the race, he emphasized the need for practicality in order to secure a Democratic victory in November.
“I commend the other candidates for their commitment to progressive ideals and their dedication to change,” Phillips said. “But we must also be pragmatic in our approach. We need a candidate who can win not only the Democratic primary, but also the general election. Joe Biden has shown that he can do just that.”
Phillips urged voters to consider the bigger picture and the urgency of this election. He stressed the importance of the Democratic Party coming together to ensure victory in November.
“It is time to wake up and unite behind Joe Biden,” Phillips concluded. “Our democracy and the values we hold dear are at stake. We cannot afford to let our differences divide us. The time for unity is now, and Joe Biden is the candidate who can bring us together and lead us to victory.
