PA lawmakers call for probe after water system hacked by anti-Israel activists
Lawmakers Call for Federal Investigation into Water System Hack
Foreign Hackers Breach Pennsylvania Water System, Prompting National Cybersecurity Warning
Three Pennsylvania lawmakers are urging a federal investigation into a recent cyber attack on a water system near Pittsburgh. The breach not only compromised the Municipal Water Authority of Aliquippa but also prompted the nation’s top cybersecurity agency to issue warnings to other water treatment utilities.
Sens. John Fetterman (D-PA), Bob Casey (D-PA), and Rep. Chris Deluzio (D-PA) have written a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland, calling for immediate action following the November 24th incident.
“Any attack on our nation’s critical infrastructure is unacceptable,” the lawmakers emphasized. “If a hack like this can happen here in western Pennsylvania, it can happen anywhere else in the United States.”
According to federal authorities, the operation is believed to be the work of Cyber Av3ngers, an Iranian-linked cyber group with a focus on disrupting Israeli-made technology in the United States. Cyber Av3ngers, identified as an “Iranian government-affiliated hacktivist group” by Check Point Software, left a message on a video screen of the compromised water pressure monitoring device, stating “You’ve been hacked” and “down with Israel.” The group targeted the device due to its Israeli components.
“Every equipment ‘made in Israel’ is Cyber Av3ngers legal target,” the message boldly proclaimed.
The equipment in question was manufactured by Unitronitics, an Israeli technology company. Cyber Av3ngers claimed responsibility for hacking ten water treatment stations on the platform formerly known as Twitter.
Despite the attack, the Aliquippa Water Authority managed to maintain service by shutting down the automated system and operating manually. However, the incident has raised concerns among security officials, leading to an investigation by the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency.
The Washington Examiner has reached out to the offices of Fetterman, Casey, and Deluzio for further details regarding the lawmakers’ letter.
What are the potential vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure systems across the country?
Authority’s network, but also raised concerns about the vulnerability of critical infrastructure across the country.
The attack, which occurred in February 2021, was allegedly carried out by foreign hackers who gained unauthorized access to the water treatment plant‘s network. Although the extent of the damage caused by the breach is still being assessed, the incident has prompted lawmakers to call for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Representatives Conor Lamb, Mike Doyle, and Tim Murphy, all from Pennsylvania, have jointly written a letter to the FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), urging them to launch a federal investigation into the cyber attack. In their letter, the lawmakers express their concern that the breach poses a significant threat to national security and calls for urgent action to safeguard critical infrastructure.
The water treatment plant, owned and operated by the Municipal Water Authority, is responsible for providing clean and safe drinking water to thousands of residents in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The infiltration of their network raises serious concerns about the safety and security of the water supply, as well as the potential for future attacks on other critical infrastructure systems.
The lawmakers highlight the need for a comprehensive assessment of the cybersecurity measures in place at water treatment plants and other critical infrastructure facilities. They argue that this incident serves as a wake-up call for the entire nation, emphasizing the urgent need to strengthen cybersecurity protocols and invest in robust defense systems to protect against such attacks.
Furthermore, the legislators also request that the federal investigation examines any possible links between the hackers and foreign entities seeking to compromise the United States’ critical infrastructure. Identifying the perpetrators and their motives will be crucial in preventing future attacks and holding those responsible accountable.
This cyber attack underscores the growing threat cybersecurity poses to critical infrastructure systems. Water treatment plants, power grids, transportation networks, and other essential facilities are now increasingly interconnected and reliant on digital technology. Consequently, they are prone to cyber threats that can have far-reaching and devastating consequences for public health and safety.
In response to this incident, other states have also started examining their own water systems for potential vulnerabilities. The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, for instance, has already ordered all public water systems in the state to conduct a thorough assessment of their cybersecurity measures and report any weaknesses or potential risks.
As the investigation into the Pennsylvania water system breach unfolds, it is crucial for federal agencies and lawmakers to take swift and decisive action. Strengthening cybersecurity measures, allocating adequate resources, and promoting information sharing and collaboration across states are essential to protecting our critical infrastructure from further attacks.
This incident serves as a stark reminder that cybersecurity is not solely a matter of individual responsibility but also requires a collective effort from government agencies, private sector organizations, and citizens to safeguard our nation’s vital systems.
With the increasing frequency and sophistication of cyber attacks, it is imperative that we remain vigilant and proactive in defending against these threats. Investing in cybersecurity infrastructure and promoting cyber hygiene practices are pivotal to ensuring the stability and security of our critical infrastructure.
Ultimately, the investigation into the Pennsylvania water system breach should serve as a catalyst for strengthening our nation’s overall cybersecurity posture and protecting the essential services on which we all rely.
