The University of Pennsylvania’s Board of Trustees recently held an “emergency meeting” in response to the backlash over President Elizabeth Magill’s comments on Capitol Hill. The meeting was called just one day after Governor Josh Shapiro criticized Magill for her remarks on anti-Semitism at the university.
According to a report by CNN, the board convened virtually after Shapiro expressed his disappointment with Magill’s testimony. The governor’s comments prompted the urgent meeting, which took place just hours after his statement.
Magill faced intense scrutiny for her response to questions from Rep. Elise Stefanik regarding students advocating for the genocide of Jews. She stated that such speech was not punished unless it escalated into conduct and emphasized the importance of context.
Shapiro strongly disagreed with Magill’s stance, stating that it violated the university’s policy. He criticized her lack of moral clarity and described her comments as “absolutely shameful.” Shapiro had previously spoken to Magill about ensuring the safety of Jewish students on campus following a tragic event in October.
Calling for action, Shapiro urged the board of trustees to assess whether Magill truly represents the values of the University of Pennsylvania. He expressed his willingness to wait for the board’s decision, emphasizing the importance of concrete actions to ensure the safety of all students.
