Paul McCartney Blames Bruce Springsteen for Long Performances
Paul McCartney recently voiced his frustration with the trend of performers putting on hours-long shows, and he pointed the finger at none other than Bruce Springsteen.
According to the former Beatles band member, before Springsteen’s influence, major musical acts were content with shorter performances.
During an interview on Conan O’Brien’s podcast, McCartney explained, “These days it’s pretty much the main act and there might be a warm-up act. Back when the Beatles were popular, bands never played for that long because one show featured so many other major acts.”
McCartney humorously blamed Springsteen for the change, stating, “Now, people do three, four hours. I blame Bruce Springsteen. I’ve told him so. I’ve said, ‘It’s your fault.’ You can’t now do an hour. We used to do a half hour. That was like the Beatles’ thing. Half an hour, and we got paid for it.”
O’Brien agreed, jokingly adding, “He ruined it for everyone.”
McCartney reminisced about the early days when playing for 30 minutes was considered extensive. Promoters would ask, “‘How long can you do? Four minutes? Can you do four minutes?’ And the guy would say, ‘Yeah,’ so they would do four. So, we thought, ‘Half an hour, that’s like epic.’”
In a previous interview, Springsteen admitted that he unintentionally set the precedent for long performances and now feels obligated to continue. McCartney also revealed that he contemplated quitting the music business after the Beatles disbanded but ultimately took the risk, which paid off.
