Oppenheimer’s grandson dislikes one scene in Nolan film.
Oppenheimer Movie Exceeds Expectations at the Box Office
As the historical drama “Oppenheimer” continues to captivate audiences and surpass box office expectations, the grandson of J. Robert Oppenheimer has shared his thoughts on the film.
A Commitment to Accurate Storytelling
Christopher Nolan’s film, based on the biography “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” has received rave reviews for its dedication to accurate storytelling. Starring Cillian Murphy, the movie delves into the life of Oppenheimer, also known as the “father of the atomic bomb.”
A Scene That Shouldn’t Have Made the Cut
In an interview with Time Magazine, Charles Oppenheimer, the grandson of J. Robert Oppenheimer, revealed the one scene he would have changed in the movie. While acknowledging the need for some dramatization and changes in film adaptations, Charles expressed his disagreement with a scene featuring a poisoned apple.
According to Charles, this scene inaccurately portrays Oppenheimer attempting to murder his teacher, a claim that lacks historical evidence. He emphasized that neither enemies nor friends of Oppenheimer ever considered this accusation to be true during his lifetime.
While the biography suggests the possibility of a poisoning attempt, Charles believes the film presents it as a more definitive event.
Fact vs. Fiction
Charles explained that sometimes facts can become distorted when passed through various sources. He noted that the movie treats the scene vaguely, making it difficult for viewers without extensive knowledge of Oppenheimer’s backstory to fully understand its significance. Charles expressed his concern that the biography included this unsubstantiated rumor without clearly indicating its speculative nature.
Despite his reservations about this particular scene, Charles overall enjoyed the film and believed it effectively portrayed his grandfather’s story.

Charles mentioned that he had the opportunity to visit the film set twice during production. While he would have removed the apple scene, he acknowledged Christopher Nolan’s expertise and artistic genius, stating that he wouldn’t dare offer advice on movie-making to such a talented filmmaker.
