A shooting on Tuesday left at least one person dead and another injured at Kentucky State University, according to police.
Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY) said that authorities have apprehended a suspect who is now in custody.
“We are aware of a reported shooting at Kentucky State University in Frankfort,” he said on X shortly after the shooting. “At this time, we are aware of some injuries. We will share more information as available. Law enforcement are on scene, and a suspect has been arrested. Let’s pray for all those affected.”
The incident unfolded around 3:35 p.m., triggering a swift police response to the “active aggressor.” Law enforcement secured the area as the campus was placed on lockdown.
“The department and university will release more details as they become available,” the Frankfort Police Department said.
Tuesday afternoon’s shooting coincided with KSU students’ final exams before they leave campus for winter break. Kentucky’s only public historically black university has more than 2,200 students.

Gunmen have targeted several historically black colleges and universities in recent months. South Carolina State University, Mississippi’s Jackson State University, and Pennsylvania’s Lincoln University saw such shootings in October during their respective homecoming weekends.
