The Fulton County Jail gained attention recently as former President Donald Trump and 18 others surrendered for booking on charges related to an alleged illegal scheme to challenge the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.
In July, the U.S. Department of Justice initiated a civil rights investigation into the jail’s conditions, citing violence, unsanitary surroundings, and the death of a man whose body was discovered infested with insects.
Lashawn Thompson, 35, tragically died last September in a bedbug-infested cell within the Fulton County Jail’s psychiatric wing. An independent autopsy, conducted at the request of his family, revealed severe neglect as the cause of death. Subsequently, his family reached a settlement with the county.
Samuel Lawrence, 34, was found unresponsive in his cell at the jail and passed away at Grady Memorial Hospital on Saturday. The other three individuals who lost their lives within the past month are Alexander Hawkins (66), Christopher Smith (34), and Montay Stinson (40).
