Omar hits Trump over ‘unhealthy obsession’ with Somali community
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) strongly condemned President Donald Trump’s recent comments targeting the Somali community in Minnesota. During a Cabinet meeting, Trump expressed an “unhealthy obsession” with the Somali population, labeling them and Omar’s associates as “garbage” and asserting that he does not want them in the United States. This followed reports of fraud involving the minnesota Somali community, which led Trump to end temporary protected status for Somalis in the state. Omar, who immigrated from Somalia in the 1990s and represents the district with the largest Somali population in the country, called trump’s remarks “completely revolting” and warned that such dehumanizing rhetoric could incite dangerous actions against Somali Americans. She also criticized Trump’s attacks on both herself and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as baseless and harmful.
Omar hits Trump over ‘unhealthy obsession’ with Minnesota’s Somali community
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) called President Donald Trump’s comments on the American Somali community “completely disgusting” on Sunday.
During a Cabinet meeting last week, Trump railed against Somalis, saying he doesn’t “want them in our country.” His tirade came after reports of fraud within the Minnesota Somali community led Trump to terminate temporary protected status for Somalis in the state.
Omar, who immigrated to the United States in the 1990s after fleeing from civil war in Somalia, represents the district with the largest Somali community in the country. She blasted Trump’s comments in an interview with CBS’s Margaret Brennan on Sunday morning.
“It’s completely disgusting. These are Americans that he is calling garbage. And we feel like there is an unhealthy obsession that he has on the Somali community, and an unhealthy and creepy obsession that he has with me,” Omar said.
Trump bashed both Omar and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) during his Cabinet meeting Tuesday, calling them both incompetent and calling Omar and “her friends” “garbage.”
“We’re going to go the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country. Ilhan Omar is garbage. She’s garbage. Her friends are garbage. These aren’t people that work. These aren’t people that say, ‘Let’s go, come on, let’s make this place great.’ These are people that do nothing but complain,” Trump said.
MINNESOTA STATE SENATE REPUBLICAN CONDEMNS TRUMP’S COMMENTS ABOUT SOMALI COMMUNITY
Trump told reporters, “I don’t want them in our country,” and said “their country is no good for a reason,” referring to Somalis. But Omar pushed back, saying Trump’s rhetoric could pose a serious threat to the American Somali community.
“I think it is also really important for us to remember that this kind of hateful rhetoric and this level of dehumanizing can lead to dangerous actions by people who listen to the president,” Omar said.
