Omar dismisses Mace censure resolution as attempt to raise money for governor run

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) dismissed her colleague Rep. Nancy Mace’s (R-SC) censure resolution against her as no more than a political move.

Mace filed a resolution to censure Omar on Monday for comments she made about the late conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

“Fun fact: Nancy Mace is trying to censure me over comments I never said,” Omar wrote on X.

“Her res does not contain a single quote from me because she couldn’t find any. Unlike her, I have routinely condemned political violence, no matter the political ideology. This is all an attempt to push a false story so she can fundraise and boost her run for Governor,” she added.

The resolution does not feature a specific quote from Omar, but it does cite reposts from the Minnesota congresswoman, who called Kirk “reprehensible” and an “adamant transphobe.”

Omar’s comments in a Zeteo town hall are also in the resolution. In the town hall, she said Kirk downplayed slavery and said he claimed “guns save lives” after a school shooting.

Mace is running for governor of South Carolina in 2026. She said earlier Tuesday that she “can’t wait” to make Omar the 29th member of Congress ever to be censured.

“No one deserves it more than Omar, who mocked the assassination of a 31-year-old husband and father, smearing him as a ‘stochastic terrorist’ for telling the truth,” she wrote on X.

The South Carolina congresswoman also sought to strip Omar of her committee assignments on the House Education and Workforce Committee and the House Budget Committee.

“If you mock a political assassination and celebrate murder, you don’t get to keep your committee seat, you get consequences,” Mace said in an accompanying statement.

Democrats have criticized Mace’s attempt to censure Omar. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) said Republicans have used the tactic whenever they are “offended.”

“Every time a Republican in this House is offended, they file a censure resolution,” she said.
