Olympic Gold Medalist Sarah Hughes Decides Not to Run for Congress
NEW YORK—In an exciting turn of events, Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hughes has made the decision not to run for Congress. This comes as several other Democrats are also vying for a Long Island seat, hoping to unseat the Republican incumbent.
Ms. Hughes, renowned for her incredible figure skating performance at the 2002 Winter Olympics, took to social media to announce her decision about running for New York’s 4th Congressional District. Although news of her filing paperwork for a run had surfaced in May, she revealed her final choice on Friday. Anthony D’Esposito, a Long Island Republican, currently holds the seat.
“For those interested, I have decided not to run for Congress at this time,” she shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Like many Americans, I have become increasingly frustrated with the state of our politics and politicians over the last several years. I will continue to advocate for reducing healthcare costs, promoting the effective use of our tax dollars, and implementing pro-growth and innovative economic policies for our country.”
A website for her campaign was not accepting donations. An email was sent seeking comment.
Mr. Hughes was only 16 years old when she won her medal at the Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. She pursued her education at Yale University, earning her undergraduate degree, and later obtained her law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
After working as an associate at the prestigious Manhattan-based corporate law firm Proskauer Rose for three years, she is currently studying for an MBA at Stanford University.
