Oklahoma prosecutors seek tougher gun law enforcement for lengthier sentences.
Oklahoma Prosecutors Crack Down on Gun Crimes to Enhance Public Safety
Oklahoma prosecutors have taken a proactive approach in addressing gun crimes, aiming to enforce existing gun laws and secure longer sentences. This strategy has gained momentum in the state’s Western District, including the capital, where U.S. Attorney Robert Troester has spearheaded two major gun initiatives. As a result, the number of gun charges has surged from 46 five years ago to 187 in the past year, according to the Oklahoman.
The primary objective of this approach is to target and reduce violent crime, a goal that prosecutors firmly believe will save lives. Troester, in particular, has focused on one of his initiatives, which specifically targets domestic abusers. Statistics have shown that when an abuser introduces a firearm into a situation, the risk of fatal outcomes significantly increases. By intervening and pursuing federal charges, prosecutors aim to prevent potential tragedies.
To effectively implement this strategy, prosecutors are collaborating with the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF). The ATF plans to bolster its presence in Oklahoma City by adding up to 10 new agents, effectively doubling the number of firearms cases they can handle. Jeff Boshek, the special agent in charge of the ATF Dallas Field Division, commended the performance of the Oklahoma offices, stating that they are among the best in the country. He emphasized that the increase in gun charges will contribute to a safer community.
It is important to note that this initiative is not an attack on the Second Amendment. Prosecutors emphasize that their focus is solely on violent criminals and not law-abiding gun owners. U.S. Attorney Troester clarified, “We’re not anti-gun, at all.”
