Ocasio-Cortez: Clarence Thomas’ Denial of Black Victimization Is ‘Deeply Disrespectful’

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Criticizes Justice Clarence Thomas for Comments on Race-Based College Admissions

During a recent interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) expressed her disagreement with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ remarks regarding race-based college admissions. Ocasio-Cortez described Thomas’ comments as “profoundly disrespectful” towards his colleague.

The discussion arose from Justice Thomas’ concurrence with the Court’s ruling that race-based college admissions are illegal. In his statement, Thomas argued against the notion that all blacks should be labeled as victims based on statistical relationships between race and various measures of health, wealth, and well-being. He emphasized that individual achievement should not be overshadowed by race.

Ocasio-Cortez criticized Thomas’ words, suggesting that they were a result of an inferior or poorly thought-out stance. She found his comments insulting and believed that they revealed his character and worldview.

Justice Thomas’ Statement:

Justice Jackson uses her broad observations about statistical relationships between race and select measures of health, wealth and well-being to label all blacks as victims. Her desire to do so is unfathomable to me. … It is an insult to individual achievement and cancerous to young minds seeking to push through barriers. … Their race is not to blame for everything — good or bad — that happens in their lives.

Ocasio-Cortez’s response to Thomas’ statement:

“I mean, what Justice Clarence Thomas wrote there, I believe, is profoundly disrespectful to his colleague. I think it’s profoundly insulting. And I think that he really demonstrated his character, frankly, and his worldview in that critique himself.”
