Former President Barack Obama Warns of Market-Based Economic Systems
Former President Barack Obama delivered a powerful speech at the Obama Foundation’s Democracy Forum in Chicago, marking 15 years since his historic election victory. During his address, Obama issued a dire warning about the limitations of market-based economic systems.
“But just because an economic system generated wealth and innovation doesn’t mean it guarantees a good society,” Obama emphasized. ”From the outset, market-based systems have been compatible with slavery, caste systems, colonialization, war, exploration, corruption, fraud, autocracy, and the poisoning of our natural environment.”
The audience responded with applause as Obama highlighted the dark side of market-based systems. He went on to credit Democratic governments for their role in “moderating capitalism’s excesses” through the implementation of a “social safety net.” According to Obama, it is crucial for young leaders to reimagine and reshape the economic system to align with democratic values.
“Especially after the Great Depression and World War II, governments began investing in education, transportation, scientific research, and housing projects,” Obama explained.
Obama and his wife, Michelle, established the Obama Foundation in 2014. The forum, which took place on Friday, served as a commemoration of the 15th anniversary of Obama’s presidency. The event featured esteemed guests such as CEOs, professors, actress Regina Hall, and PBS anchor Judy Woodruff.
In addition to discussing economic systems, Obama briefly addressed the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, stating that it has prompted a “moral reckoning” for all of us.
