Obama surprises preschoolers with Christmas visit
Former President Barack Obama Surprises Preschoolers in Chicago
Former President Barack Obama made a surprise visit to the Parkside Community Academy in Chicago, Illinois. The students were in for a treat as Obama arrived bearing gifts and wearing a Santa hat.
“Oh, my God,” a young student exclaimed upon seeing the former president, according to the Chicago-Sun Times.
Obama had a sack of presents slung over his back, just like Santa Claus, and he made sure that all 20 children in the classroom received a gift. Not only that, but the entire school was also gifted with winter accessories.
But the surprises didn’t end there. Obama took the time to read the students a Christmas book called Santa’s Gotta Go. The children were captivated by the story, and at one point, Obama himself was shocked and exclaimed, “He called Mrs. Claus ‘babe’!”
“For him to take the time to come here out of his busy schedule to read a book, it just shows that he is still a leader,” said longtime Parkside teacher Debra Gardner.
The visit had a profound impact on the students. Parkside Principal Tori Williams-Hughes expressed, “It’s a little new to them to really understand the magnitude of who he is and what he’s done for the country.”
The Obama Foundation chose the school for the visit due to its proximity to the future Obama Presidential Center, currently under construction. Both Barack and Michelle Obama have strong connections to Chicago, with Michelle growing up there and Barack spending time in the city as a community organizer and university student.
