Obama Presidential Center becomes target of online trolling

The Obama Presidential Center, set to open next year on chicago’s South Side, has become a target of online ridicule, especially from conservative politicians. Unlike customary presidential libraries, the Center is a privately operated, non-federal association that will borrow some artifacts from the National Archives. the $830 million project, which includes the first fully digital presidential library, has drawn criticism for its architectural design, with figures like Senator Ted Cruz comparing it to the “Death Star” from star wars, and others commenting negatively on its appearance. Despite the controversy, the Center represents a modern approach to presidential archives, reflecting that 95% of records from Obama’s management were already digital.

Former President Barack Obama’s Presidential Center became the butt of many jokes made online by politicians.

This Presidential Center is separate from Obama’s Presidential Library, but will borrow some artifacts from the National Archives to display at its location in Chicago’s South Side. According to its website, “the Center is a privately operated, non-federal organization.”

While the center won’t open until next year, 10 years after Obama left office, a post capturing the progress of the center’s construction invited criticism of the design.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) likened it to the Death Star from the Star Wars franchise.

“Locating the Death Star in Chicago was a bold move,” Cruz wrote Tuesday.

“This makes me want to cling to my religion and my guns,” Conservative Political Action Conference Chair Matt Schlapp wrote.

“It’s kind of…ugly,” Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York wrote on X.
