New rule aims to reduce emissions from NYC pizza ovens: Report

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection Aims to Reduce Carbon Emissions from Restaurants

The New York City Department of Environmental Protection is taking steps to address the issue of carbon emissions from restaurants with brick and wood-fired ovens. According to reports, the department is currently drafting a rule that would require these establishments to reduce their emissions by a significant 75%.

Assessing Feasibility and Implementing Controls

The proposed rule would mandate that affected restaurants assess the practicality of installing an emission control device to achieve the required 75% reduction. If installing such a device is not feasible or not possible, the restaurants would still be required to reduce their emissions by at least 25%. In cases where controls cannot be installed, a valid explanation must be provided.

It is estimated that fewer than 100 restaurants in New York City would be affected by this proposed rule, according to a city official.

Promoting Healthy Air and Environmental Justice

Department of Environmental Protection spokesman Ted Timbers emphasized the importance of clean air for all New Yorkers. He stated, “Wood and coal-fired stoves are among the largest contributors of harmful pollutants in neighborhoods with poor air quality.” Timbers further explained that the rule was developed in collaboration with restaurant and environmental justice groups, ensuring a balanced approach.

Consideration for Restaurants Amidst the Pandemic

The implementation of the proposed rules has been delayed due to concerns about the impact on restaurants already struggling with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. The city Department of Environmental Protection is taking these concerns into account before finalizing the rule.

The Washington Examiner has reached out to the New York City Department of Environmental Protection for further comment on this matter.
