NYC Mayor Eric Adams heads back to DC to address migrant crisis with Dem leaders
Democratic NYC Mayor Eric Adams to Discuss Migrant Crisis with Congressional Leaders
Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams is set to meet with several Democratic congressional leaders in Washington on Thursday to address the city’s migrant crisis. This comes one month after Adams abruptly left the capital due to an FBI inquiry into his campaign.
Adams is scheduled to sit down with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) during his visit. However, there is no confirmation of a meeting with the White House at this time. He is also expected to meet with Federal Emergency Management Agency Director Deanne Criswell, according to NBC News.
Seeking Federal Assistance for the Migrant Crisis
The purpose of Adams’ trip is to secure more federal assistance for the city’s migrant crisis, particularly in terms of housing and caring for the immigrants. Adams estimates that the crisis will cost the city $12 billion by 2025 if the influx of immigrants continues. Since the spring of 2022, New York City has received over 125,000 immigrants.
“The goal is to constantly go there, be front and center, and raise the concerns of how this is impacting our city. And that’s the goal,” Adams stated during a press conference on Tuesday.
This trip marks Adams’ 10th visit to Washington to address the crisis. Previously, he had to abruptly leave before any meetings with the White House or Congress took place due to the federal inquiry.
Pushing for Funding for Sanctuary Cities
Originally, Adams was expected to join other mayors in discussing the larger migrant crisis affecting “sanctuary cities” and to secure $5 billion in federal assistance. While the White House has only requested $1.4 billion from Congress for the crisis, they have expressed commitment to helping sanctuary cities obtain funding.
Adams has also criticized FEMA for its insufficient funding in the past. Earlier this year, the federal emergency program allocated $30 million to New York City for immigrant support. However, Adams argued that this amount was inadequate considering the scale of the crisis in comparison to other cities.
“FEMA allocated out of the $350 million, only $30 million went to New York City. So we received the large sum of migrants in our city, but we’re not getting the funding to match,” Adams expressed during an interview with MSNBC in May. “The plan on our bordering states is simply to use the money from FEMA to bus migrants to New York City. That is just not a workable solution.”
The city has received some funding from the state, but Governor Kathy Hochul (D-NY) has also appealed to the federal government for additional assistance.

In addition to seeking federal assistance, how does Eric Adams plan to maintain New York City as a safe and welcoming place for migrants, while upholding the city’s values of inclusivity and diversity
Ates that there are currently over 14,000 migrants in New York City, and the city’s resources are being stretched thin in trying to meet their needs. He argues that federal support is crucial to dealing with this crisis effectively and ensuring that the migrants receive the support they need during their stay in the city.
In his discussions with congressional leaders, Adams will emphasize the importance of immigration reform and urge the federal government to implement a comprehensive plan that addresses the root causes of the migrant crisis. He will also call for increased funding for border security to prevent the influx of undocumented immigrants and ensure a secure border. Adams believes that a comprehensive approach is necessary to tackle the complex issues surrounding immigration, and he hopes that his discussions with congressional leaders will lead to meaningful action on these matters.
Maintaining a Safe and Welcoming City
In addition to seeking federal assistance, Adams also wants to ensure that New York City remains a safe and welcoming place for all residents, including the migrant community. He believes that by working together with federal agencies and local stakeholders, his administration can create a comprehensive plan to address the challenges posed by the migrant crisis while upholding the city’s values of inclusivity and diversity.
Adams has already taken several steps to improve the lives of migrants in the city. Earlier this year, he announced a series of measures aimed at providing legal assistance, language services, and job training opportunities to migrants in New York City. He has also created a task force to address the housing needs of migrants and implement policies that promote integration and opportunity for all residents.
A Fresh Start for Adams
Eric Adams’ decision to meet with congressional leaders signals a fresh start for his administration and a renewed commitment to addressing the migrant crisis. Despite the recent controversy surrounding his campaign, Adams remains focused on delivering results for the city and advocating for the needs of its most vulnerable residents.
By engaging with federal leaders, Adams aims to form partnerships that will enable New York City to better address the migrant crisis and serve as a model for other cities facing similar challenges. He believes that by working together, the federal and local governments can make a positive impact on the lives of migrants and create a more just and inclusive society for all Americans.
