Noem taps 14-year ICE attorney to serve as agency’s new deputy director

Homeland Security Secretary kristi Noem announced that Charles Wall will instantly become the deputy director of Immigration and Customs enforcement (ICE). Wall, an ICE attorney as 2012 who last year served as the agency’s principal Legal Advisor, was praised by Noem for helping prioritize the arrest and removal of dangerous criminal noncitizens. He previously worked as a prosecutor and Senior Assistant District Attorney in the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office (2009-2012). Wall replaces Madison Sheahan, who resigned this week to run for Congress after a brief tenure following her March appointment. Todd Lyons has been serving as ICE’s acting director as March, and Wall will report to him as the agency confronts high-profile enforcement challenges nationwide, including unrest in Minneapolis after an ICE-related fatal shooting. The move signals an emphasis on experienced legal leadership and strict enforcement priorities.

Noem taps 14-year ICE attorney to serve as agency’s new deputy director

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced Thursday that Charles Wall will take over as the deputy director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

ICE’s previous deputy director, Madison Sheahan, left the agency on Thursday to run for Congress.

“Effective immediately, Charles Wall will serve as the Deputy Director of @ICEGov,” Noem wrote on X.

“For the last year, Mr. Wall served as ICE’s Principal Legal Advisor, playing a key role in helping us deliver historic results in arresting and removing the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens from American neighborhoods,” Noem added. “Mr. Wall has served as an ICE attorney for 14 years and is a forward-leaning, strategic thinker who understands the importance of prioritizing the removal of murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang members, and terrorists from our country.”

Wall has considerably more experience with ICE than 28-year-old Sheahan, who joined the agency after a stint as Noem’s political director and as the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries’ secretary.

The new deputy director has worked for ICE since 2012, with his duties mostly in the legal realm. Before that, he served as a prosecutor and Senior Assistant District Attorney at the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office from 2009 to 2012.

Sheahan was appointed in March of this year and left on Wednesday to run for Ohio Rep. Marcy Kaptur’s (D-OH) seat.

“Thank you, President @realDonaldTrump and @Sec_Noem, for your leadership and steadfast commitment to Defend the Homeland. As I depart @ICEgov today, I am proud of the work we have done to protect American families and I am grateful for the brave men and women serving at ICE,” she wrote on X Thursday.

Todd Lyons has served as the agency’s acting head since March. Wall will serve directly under Lyons as the agency comes to grips with its wide presence across the country, including in Minneapolis.
