Nikki Haley urges GOP: Continue supporting Ukraine with billions, don’t withdraw.
Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley calls for increased support to Ukraine
In a recent interview, Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley expressed her belief that Republicans should be in favor of providing additional support to Ukraine in its ongoing war against Russia. Haley argued that this support would only constitute a small portion of the U.S. defense budget.
Haley made these remarks during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.” The discussion arose when Tapper asked about the G20’s failure to condemn Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in their recent statement.
“It was a win for Russia and China. They’re celebrating today,” Haley stated. “I mean, what we should have had was, Biden should have really pushed hard to acknowledge what he acknowledged a year ago, that Russia invaded a pro-American, freedom-loving country. And that’s a fact. And to deny a fact a year later is giving a win to Russia.”
Tapper then questioned whether some House Republicans were making a mistake by attempting to remove $24 billion in aid to Ukraine from the upcoming government spending bill.
“I think that you have to look at the fact that only 3.5 percent of our defense budget has been allocated towards Ukraine,” Haley responded. “That’s just 3.5 percent. In terms of GDP, 11 countries have actually spent more than us.”
Haley emphasized the importance of preventing a full-on war, stating, “We know that Russia has expressed their intentions to target Poland and the Baltics once they have control over Ukraine. By providing equipment and ammunition to Ukraine, we are actively working to prevent war. That’s a pretty good return on investment.”
“I think that we need to continue supporting Ukraine with our allies to ensure their victory,” she added, clarifying that she did not advocate for deploying troops on the ground.
Haley concluded by urging both Republicans and Democrats not to repeat the mistakes made in Afghanistan, stating, “Don’t go pulling out now.”
