Nikki Haley admits Trump’s slim chances in general election, but pledges support if he secures nomination.
Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley supports Trump but doubts his chances of winning a second term
In an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Haley expressed her support for former President Donald Trump if he becomes the GOP’s nominee for the 2024 election. However, she also stated that she doesn’t believe Trump can win in a general election and thinks the Republican Party should nominate someone else.
“I would support him because I am not going to have a President Kamala Harris,” Haley said. “We can’t afford that. That is not going to happen.”
While Haley, the former U.S. ambassador to the U.N., remains loyal to her former boss, she expressed concerns about another Trump nomination.
“But I will tell you, you look at these indictments, there’s probably going to be a fourth indictment. We can’t have, as Republicans, him as the nominee,” the former governor added. “He can’t win a general election. That’s the problem. We’ve got to go and have someone who can actually win.”
Haley also downplayed early polls showing her far behind Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, stating that the race is a marathon and will start to shake up post-Labor Day.
Iowa Caucus and the upcoming Republican presidential debate
In the crucial Iowa Caucus, Trump leads with over 50%, followed by DeSantis at 19%, Sen. Tim Scott at 7%, and Haley and former Vice President Mike Pence at just 4%, according to the Real Clear Politics polling average. The first Republican presidential debate is scheduled for August 23 in Milwaukee, and Haley has qualified to appear on stage with six other candidates. However, one of Trump’s advisers has suggested that the former president is unlikely to participate in the debate.

Last month, Haley criticized both Trump and DeSantis for their refusal to state whether they want Ukraine to win its war against Russia. She also accused Trump of allowing China to grow stronger militarily during his time in office.
When it comes to criticizing Trump, Haley emphasized her commitment to being forthright.
“There are people who really want me to like Trump 100% of the time or not like him 100% of the time. That’s not how I think. I shoot it straight. If he does something good, I support him. If he doesn’t do something good, I hit him on it.”
