Nikki Haley suggests mental tests for entire Congress.
Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley calls for mental competency tests for Congress
“I am completely for term limits. I’m completely for mental competency tests for anyone over the age of 75. And I’m not saying that to be disrespectful,”
“Here, you have Mitch McConnell, who’s done great service to the country. You have Dianne Feinstein, who had a great career. You’ve got Nancy Pelosi, who’s been there a long time. At what point do they get it’s time to leave?”
In a recent interview on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley expressed her support for mental competency tests for members of Congress. As concerns grow about the cognitive abilities of some of the oldest lawmakers, Haley suggests that it may be necessary for the “entire Congress” to undergo these tests.
Haley’s comments were made in response to Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s recent episode where he froze while speaking to the media. While acknowledging the contributions of long-serving politicians like McConnell, Dianne Feinstein, and Nancy Pelosi, Haley emphasized the need for a younger generation to take over and advance America’s interests for future generations.
A bipartisan issue
Haley stressed that this is not a partisan issue, but rather a problem that affects Congress as a whole. She believes that lawmakers should recognize when it’s time to step aside and pass the torch to a new generation of conservative leaders who are committed to taking the country to a better place.
When asked about the need for a leadership shakeup within the Republican party, Haley broadened her stance, stating that this change should apply to both Republicans and Democrats. She highlighted the American people’s desire for term limits, as they do not want individuals to remain in power indefinitely or become intoxicated by their positions.
Mental competency tests for all
Building on her previous statements, Haley advocated for mental competency tests for all individuals aged 50 and older, including the entire Congress. She described these tests as basic assessments that would evaluate candidates’ knowledge of personal details, such as their place of birth and the ability to name words starting with the same letter. Additionally, candidates would be required to provide financial disclosures and a notice from a doctor regarding their mental capacity.
Haley cited examples of lawmakers like Dianne Feinstein being guided by aides on how to vote and instances of Mitch McConnell freezing at a podium. She also expressed concern about Joe Biden forgetting his location. According to Haley, these incidents not only undermine America’s image but also make the country less safe in the eyes of its enemies.
As the race for the presidency continues, Haley’s call for mental competency tests has sparked a debate about the qualifications and abilities of those in positions of power.
