Nike’s ongoing fixation with Colin Kaepernick persists as they unveil a fresh collaboration of socially conscious apparel.
A Blast from the Past: Remembering Jan. 1, 2017
So much has changed since Jan. 1, 2017. It feels like a different era altogether. Back then, Barack Obama was still the president, Tom Brady was a loyal New England Patriot, and “Star Wars” dominated the box office. The world was grooving to Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic,” and the term “COVID-19” hadn’t even entered our vocabulary. It’s truly mind-boggling to think about.
But amidst all these changes, there’s one name that refuses to fade away: Colin Kaepernick. The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who last played a meaningful snap in the NFL on that very day, continues to be propped up by the media and even sports giant Nike.

In a recent social media post, Kaepernick is quoted as saying, “I wake up in the morning, and I have a deep conviction and belief in us — and what we can do, and that’s what motivates me to get up and do my part in bringing this to life.” The post goes on to talk about his new apparel collection, designed by artist Joy Yamusangie, which aims to tell his story of impact and inspire others.
But let’s not forget why Kaepernick is famous in the first place. It’s not for his football skills, but for kneeling during the national anthem as a form of protest. While the conversation about criminal justice reform is important, Kaepernick’s approach was disrespectful and divisive.
Despite his lackluster performance on the field and his controversial actions off the field, Kaepernick continues to be celebrated and supported. And now, Nike has joined the bandwagon with their new “capsule collection” based on him.
One can’t help but wonder why Nike is so insistent on working with a has-been like Kaepernick when there are plenty of other relevant athletes out there. The answer is simple: it’s a cheap way for Nike to score intersectionality points and appear socially conscious.
As for Kaepernick, he knows he’s past his prime, and so does Nike. That’s why his attempt to play for the New York Jets was rejected. If he were to play and struggle, his victim status would be revoked, and his gravy train would come to an end.
So, while Kaepernick and Nike continue their collaboration, let’s not forget that actions speak louder than apparel. A $80 sweater may look trendy, but it doesn’t make the world a better place.

How has Nike’s association with Colin Kaepernick sparked controversy and generated buzz for their brand?
E: controversy sells. By aligning themselves with Kaepernick, Nike is able to tap into the ongoing debate surrounding his actions and generate buzz for their brand. It’s a calculated move, aimed at capturing attention and appealing to a specific demographic.
However, in the grand scheme of things, the association with Kaepernick might not be the best for Nike. While they may gain some short-term visibility, they also risk alienating a large portion of their customer base who do not support the former quarterback’s actions. It’s a fine line to walk, and one that could potentially backfire for the sportswear giant.
Looking back at Jan. 1, 2017, it’s interesting to see how much has changed and evolved. The world is a different place, and the issues we face now are vastly different from what they were just a few years ago. But amidst all this change, there are some constants, like Colin Kaepernick’s continued presence in the media.
Love him or hate him, Kaepernick has managed to keep himself relevant, even when his football career has faded away. Whether he is truly making a positive impact or simply seeking attention, only time will tell. But one thing is for sure: Jan. 1, 2017 may seem like a distant memory, but the legacy of Colin Kaepernick continues to be a topic of discussion and debate.
