Family-Owned Business Faces Nightmare, Yet Owners Remain Faithful and Thankful to God
On Sunday night, a fire caused significant damage to the Helberg Barbeque in Speegleville, Texas — a suburb of Waco.
The Helbergs, the resilient proprietors of the restaurant, responded to the unexpected devastation with unwavering faith and gratitude towards God.
“The enemy is going to have to work a lot harder than this to shake our faith,” the Helbergs wrote Monday as part of a lengthy Facebook post.
The Helbergs have always relied on their faith in God to sustain them, as acknowledged by co-founder Phillip Helberg in an interview with KWTX-TV in Waco.
“It’s the prayer and the comfort from our God that’s getting us through this right now,” he said.
Helberg also humbly requested spiritual assistance from the viewers, acknowledging the power of prayer.
Prior to the fire, the Helberg Barbeque website joyfully proclaimed a Bible verse to celebrate the upcoming Christmas season.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace,” the restaurant’s website proclaimed Isaiah 9:6.
Even in the face of adversity, the Helbergs continue to exemplify their faith. In their Facebook post about the fire, they expressed gratitude that no one was hurt and praised God for His protection.
“James 1:2 says ‘Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds. For you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have it’s full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing,’” they added.
They firmly believe that the fire is just another chapter in God’s plan to demonstrate His goodness and faithfulness.
Christians often struggle to feel gratitude in the face of adversity. However, Christianity teaches us that our actions should be driven by love, not just our feelings. When we choose to thank God amidst our problems, we experience the peace that comes from gratitude, even if our problems persist.
This perspective is closely tied to humility, which serves as an antidote to the destructive sin of pride. In contrast to prideful individuals who would have reacted with self-congratulation or blame towards God, the Helbergs’ response is a shining example of humility and faith.
We can learn from the Helbergs’ Christian example and pray for their strength as they rebuild their restaurant.
