Rapper Nicki Minaj criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and referred to him by the Trump-coined nickname “Newscum,” first coined by President Donald Trump.
Minaj, whose legal name is Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, took to X Dec. 12 to issue a litany of criticisms against the California governor regarding his stance on transgender procedures for children. Turning Point USA CEO Erika Kirk invited Minaj to read the tweets from her phone during AmericaFest on Sunday, which Minaj followed with a new message for Newsom.
“Dear Newscum,” Minaj said, pausing for applause from the crowd, “we don’t have a problem cleaning up the scum if we have to. Please tread lightly. That’s what I would say to Gavvy Pooh.”

AmericaFest commenced this year with Kirk endorsing Vice President JD Vance for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination. Newsom has been floated as a contender for the Democratic nomination, with next year being his last as governor due to term limits. According to Minaj, Vance is “someone that you relate to.”
“This administration is full of people with heart and soul. They make me proud of them. Our vice president — I love both of them. They’re both powerful men, smart, strong, all of that, but both of them have that very uncanny ability to be someone that you relate to,” Minaj said.
“I can relate to them. When I hear them speak, I know that they’re one of us. They haven’t lost touch of the world. They’re still connected to the world and what’s happening in the world,” Minaj added.

Minaj also complimented Trump, whom she noted is “from Queens, New York, like me.” Minaj was born in Trinidad and Tobago but moved to New York City at an early age. According to an interview from last year, Minaj was still not a U.S. citizen and therefore cannot vote in U.S. elections.
“I have the utmost respect and admiration for our president. I don’t know if he even knows this, but he’s given so many people hope that there’s a chance to beat the bad guys and to win and to do it with your head held high and your integrity intact,” Minaj said.

“What it’s shown me personally is: Sometimes you know even in the worst-feeling times in your life, you think you’re never going to come back from it, but you do. Our president shows that. He’s been through every single thing a person could be through publicly, having to constantly be lied on,” Minaj said.
Earlier this year, Minaj addressed the United Nations. There, she thanked Trump for his “urgent action” on the violence in Nigeria.
