Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson will officially be stepping down from his position as the country’s leader as of September 6, after he accepted the timetable put forward by his party. This means that the leadership race for Johnson’s successor and the UK’s next Prime Minister will be decided by September 5.
Conservative committee leader Graham Brady made the announcement on Monday, according to Politico.
Nominations for the next leader will be held on Tuesday. Nominees will need to secure the support of 20 Conservative MPs. Several rounds of voting will narrow it down to two candidates, and the leader will be chosen by a vote of 200,000 Conservative members.
Johnson announced his resignation last week in light of a scandalous tenure, including the appointment of Chris Pincher as deputy chief whip, despite knowing of his sexual misconduct allegations. That scandal and others led to many of Johnson’s cabinet ministers resigning.
