Newsom’s spokesperson dismisses DeSantis team’s ‘ridiculous’ debate rules.
A Spokesperson for Gov. Gavin Newsom Blasts Proposed Debate Rules
A spokesperson for Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has strongly criticized the debate rules put forward by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL). The office of DeSantis sent an email to Fox News’s Sean Hannity, who has been chosen to mediate the debate. Politico obtained a copy of the email.
Debate Format Disagreements
Both Newsom and DeSantis have agreed that Sean Hannity will be the sole questioner and will ensure that the two governors do not interrupt each other. However, there are disagreements on other aspects of the debate format.
- DeSantis’s team proposed having a live audience, while Newsom prefers an empty room.
- DeSantis’s team suggested replacing the opening statements with video presentations.
- Both agreed on holding the debate in Georgia on Nov. 8.
Newsom’s spokesperson, Nathan Click, expressed his dissatisfaction with DeSantis’s proposals, stating, “What a joke. DeSantis’ counter-proposal is littered with crutches to hide his insecurity and ineptitude — swapping opening statements with a hype video, cutting down the time he needs to be on stage, adding cheat notes and a cheering section.”
Click further commented, “Ron should be able to stand on his own two feet. It’s no wonder Trump is kicking his a**.”
The Washington Examiner reached out to DeSantis’s office for comment, but they did not respond.
Just this week, DeSantis agreed to the debate, which had been suggested by Newsom back in September. DeSantis is currently running for president in 2024, competing against twelve other Republican candidates, including former President Donald Trump. While Newsom has not announced his intention to challenge President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination, there has been speculation about his potential White House ambitions.
