Newsom criticizes Trump for misleading statements on abortion policy, accuses him of dishonesty

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) suggested that Donald Trump could be capable of signing a federal abortion ban, should he win in November.

Newsom appeared on Inside with Jen Psaki in an episode airing Sunday to criticize the Republican candidate for president. The California governor questioned Trump’s stance on not federalizing an abortion stance.

“He’s a liar. He’s not telling you the truth. He’s not level-setting. He’ll say whatever he needs to say on any day of the week,” Newsom said. “Look, I mean he’s created these conditions. He celebrated those conditions. He celebrated the fact that he was responsible for overturning Roe. He said that he would criminalize women. He’s on tape saying these things. He’ll say whatever he needs to say at any given moment.”

Notably, former President Donald Trump claimed the ban goes too far. Trump appointed three of the Supreme Court Justices who ultimately overturned the federal protection around the procedure with their Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision.

Meanwhile, in California, abortions are still allowed until fetal viability, which is about 24 weeks. State laws go as far as protecting the data of abortion clients and the doctors who perform them from out-of-state litigation.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the Trump campaign for comment.

Trump has publicly disagreed with the Arizona Supreme Court that ruled abortion illegal even in the case of rape and incest, claiming it went too far. Any person convicted under this law could face two to five years in prison.
