Newsom praises Biden, criticizes Trump’s desire for a dated world
Gov. Gavin Newsom: An Optimistic Outlook Amidst Anxiety
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has a unique perspective on the state of the nation, one that Democrats hope President Joe Biden would adopt. In a podcast interview with Democratic organizer Simon Rosenberg, Newsom described the current state of the union as ”extraordinary” but also expressed concerns about the potential return of former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election.
“What I’m feeling is deep optimism but anxiety, so that twin of both inspiration-desperation,” Newsom shared.
Newsom’s unwavering support for Biden is evident, despite calls for him to enter the presidential race himself. During the podcast, he highlighted the positive changes brought about by the current administration and warned about the potential reversals that Trump could enact.
“Let us maintain our democracy and our freedoms by bringing this extraordinary administration back in for four more years,” Newsom passionately declared.
The latest Emerson College Polling presidential survey reveals a tight race between Biden and Trump. Newsom specifically pointed out the potential consequences of a Trump presidency, such as the overturning of Roe v. Wade and setbacks in women’s and LGBTQ+ rights.
“The whole notion that the last half-century or 60-70 years being rolled back in real time, that’s the consequence of this election, the pre-1960s world these guys want to put America in reverse,” Newsom emphasized.
Rosenberg, the podcast host, argued that the negative public perception of Biden is largely driven by Trump supporters. While many polls do show high disapproval of Biden, head-to-head election polls still indicate a close race between Trump and Biden.
“Part of our challenge,” Rosenberg explained to Newsom, ”is that MAGA people give Biden zero on everything, so it pulls all the numbers down.”
Despite these challenges, Newsom highlighted the Democratic Party’s recent electoral successes and dismissed claims of defeat and poor policy. He emphasized the importance of celebrating these victories and expanding the party’s reach into red states and skeptical constituencies.
“We keep winning. Democrats, we keep winning. It’s remarkable, overperforming consistently 2018, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024,” Newsom proudly stated.
Newsom acknowledged the need for the White House to bridge the gap between the perceived successful economy and the concerns of the American people, as reflected in various polls.
“Our job is to mind that gap between performance and what people are perceiving and feeling out there,” Newsom explained. “We’ve been polarized. We’ve been traumatized in the last many years. We talk about the economy when people really want to talk about them.”
“And there’s a sense that the economy is not very nurturing, the economy is not necessarily supporting that people do feel that stress that they’re one paycheck away, and they do feel that pressure of that paycheck being stretched as it relates to the impacts of global inflation. And so, I do think we have to be mindful of that, as we then assert, as you have forcefully, that the economy is booming,” he added.
