‘Preppy Killer’ freed after strangling teen girl in 80s.

New York City’s ⁢Infamous “Preppy Killer” Released ⁢from Prison

Robert Chambers, known as the “Preppy ⁤Killer,”⁤ has been released from prison on parole ⁢after serving⁢ 15 years for drug charges. The 56-year-old was released from New York’s Shawangunk Correctional Facility on ⁣Tuesday, not far from the scene of his notorious crime in Central Park in 1986.

Chambers gained notoriety when he brutally strangled 18-year-old Jennifer Levin in Central Park. Dubbed the “Preppy Killer” due to his clean-cut appearance, he also earned the⁣ nickname the‍ “Central Park Strangler.”

“I’ve been ⁤in this business for a while, and you’re the first man I’ve seen raped in Central‍ Park,” the‌ prosecutor told Chambers at the time.

Chambers and Levin were⁢ part of a ⁢high society social circle and had been at a bar on ‍the Upper East Side on the night of ⁣the murder. After ⁣leaving the bar, their encounter turned ⁣violent, with Chambers beating and smothering Levin with his jacket.

Chambers changed his story multiple times but eventually claimed that ⁢he accidentally strangled Levin during “rough sex.” However, the significant difference in size‍ between the two raised doubts about his claim.

Chambers was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to 15 years⁢ in prison. He was released in 2003 but returned to prison for ⁢selling drugs and resisting arrest. He pleaded guilty to drug charges in 2008 and received a ‍19-year sentence.

Chambers’ current whereabouts‍ are unknown, and he will remain on parole until⁣ 2028.
