Minutes after a 1.7 magnitude earthquake shook New York City in the early morning hours, reports of explosions flooded social media. The residents of Roosevelt Island were left bewildered by the loud noises, trembling buildings, and sudden loss of power.

Witnesses described the scene as helicopters hovered above Roosevelt Island, monitoring the area after a loud thumping explosion-like sound was heard. Concerned citizens ventured outside to see what was happening as first responders rushed to ensure the safety of the buildings.
As a result of the earthquake and subsequent explosions, power outages affected buildings south of the Roosevelt Island Bridge and Tram. The New York City Fire Department handed over the incident to Con Edison, the city’s largest utility company.
The epicenter of the earthquake was determined to be in Astoria, located in the borough of Queens. Mayor Eric Adams, during a press briefing, mentioned that he did not personally feel the tremors.
While earthquakes in the New York City area are uncommon, they are not unheard of. The most recent tremor occurred in New Jersey and the Yonkers area last May, registering as a magnitude 2.2 quake.
