New York City Mayor Eric Adams claimed Zohran Mamdani has a fatal flaw of not apologizing in order to “maintain relationships with the international community.”
New York City Mayor Eric adams criticized Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for his refusal to apologize over several controversies, including Mamdani’s repeated refusal to condemn the phrase “Globalize the intifada,” which refers to violent uprisings against Israel.Adams emphasized that, as a leader of an international city, Mamdani must maintain good relations with the global community and show accountability by apologizing when necessary. Adams also referenced a video posted by Mamdani parodying Hanukkah, which Adams cited as mocking the holiday, further fueling accusations of antisemitism against Mamdani. The mayor contrasted Mamdani’s unwillingness to apologize with his own approach, acknowledging mistakes during his tenure and apologizing for them publicly. Adams and Mamdani are set to compete in the upcoming New York City mayoral election.
Eric Adams blasts Mamdani for ‘unwillingness to apologize’ for controversies
New York City Mayor Eric Adams claimed the Democratic nominee for mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has the flaw of not apologizing, even though he must “maintain relationships with the international community.”
Mamdani has repeatedly refused to condemn the phrase, “Globalize the intifada,” despite insisting he doesn’t use it. This phrase refers to violent uprisings against Israel.
Adams knocked Mamdani for not apologizing for the phrase while he was on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria on Tuesday.
“This is an international city, and you must be able to maintain relationships with the international community. Not only [Mamdani’s] unwillingness to do global intifada, but his unwillingness to apologize for mocking Hanukkah, just the unwillingness of just saying, ‘I’m wrong,’” Adams said.
The reference to Hanukkah comes from a video Mamdani posted last year that is still live. In the video, comedic duo Geeta Brothers are dressed in Jewish attire during a parody song to wish Jewish people a happy third night of Hanukkah.
Then, the mayor referenced the five federal corruption charges against him that the Department of Justice dismissed.
“I tell New York City all the time, these last 15 months, there were things that I could have done better, and I apologize for the city,” Adams said. “Never broke laws, but you should be willing to say, ‘Hey, I could have done something better.’ There is nothing wrong with that.”

New York City has a large Jewish community, and Mamdani faced accusations of antisemitism over his refusal to condemn the phrase, in addition to his staunch anti-Israel stances, including support for boycotting, divesting from, and sanctioning the country — a policy that studies show disenfranchises Jewish people.
Adams is running as an independent candidate in November despite initially winning office as a Democrat and his claims that he is a Democratic mayor. He will face off against Mamdani in November.
