Liberal Wisconsin Supreme Court clashes with conservatives as new term nears.
The Wisconsin Supreme Court Flips: A Shift in Power
The long-standing conservative Wisconsin Supreme Court flipped for the first time in 15 years last week after liberal Judge Janet Protasiewicz was sworn in. This historic event marks a significant change in the court’s composition, as liberal justices now hold the majority. The path to this shift in power was paved by the most expensive state judicial election in U.S. history, which saw Justice Jill Karofsky entering her 10-year term. However, this change has not come without its fair share of tensions.
Party Tensions Rise Ahead of the Court’s Term
Apprehensions between the justices have escalated, with Chief Justice Annette Ziegler, a conservative, openly criticizing her liberal colleagues. Ziegler expressed her disapproval of the firing of the state courts director, Randy Koschnick, who was appointed in 2017 by the then-conservative court. In a lengthy statement, Ziegler condemned the move, stating that it demonstrated an “unprecedented dangerous conduct” and an exercise of overreaching power.
Responding to Ziegler’s remarks, liberal Justice Rebecca Dallet released a statement of her own. Dallet revealed that the majority of justices had voted to shift power away from Ziegler to a new committee. This controversial decision aimed to promote transparency and accountability within the court, making it more accessible to the people of Wisconsin. Dallet expressed her disappointment in Ziegler for choosing to address the court’s issues through media releases rather than through proper channels.
The dispute between the justices looms over the court’s upcoming term, which is expected to feature several high-profile cases. Among these cases are a lawsuit seeking to undo the state’s ban and a push from national Democrats to reinstate the use of absentee ballot drop boxes ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
As the Wisconsin Supreme Court prepares to tackle these crucial matters, the dynamics within the court have undeniably shifted. The clash between conservative and liberal justices sets the stage for a term filled with intense debates and potentially groundbreaking decisions.
