NJ Lt. Governor passes away due to undisclosed health problem.
New Jersey Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver Passes Away
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of the Honorable Sheila Y. Oliver, Lieutenant Governor of the State of New Jersey. Her family shared this heartbreaking news on Tuesday.
Just yesterday, it was reported that Oliver, a 71-year-old Democrat, had been admitted to Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston for medical care related to an unspecified health issue. She had been temporarily serving as acting governor while Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy was away.
Oliver’s family released a statement through the governor’s office, saying, “She was not only a distinguished public servant but also our cherished daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and hero.”
Born and raised in a vibrant and diverse neighborhood in Newark, Oliver made history as the first African American woman to serve as assembly speaker in 2010. She had been serving as lieutenant governor since 2018, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of dedication and service.
Upon hearing the news, Gov. Murphy expressed his grief, saying, “Tammy and I, and our children, are incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend, colleague, and partner in government, [Oliver]. We ask that you all keep the Oliver family and all those who loved her in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
Murphy had recently left the state for a vacation in Italy, where he owns a villa. With Oliver unable to fulfill her duties as acting governor, state Sen. Nicholas Scutari stepped in as prescribed by the New Jersey Constitution.
The family has requested privacy as they mourn the loss of their beloved Sheila Y. Oliver. They expressed gratitude for the support and understanding of the public. Memorial arrangements will be announced in due course.
