New Hampshire Defies Democratic Party, Sets Early Primary Date for 2024
In a bold move, New Hampshire’s secretary of state has scheduled the state’s presidential primaries for January 23, 2024, extending its century-old streak of being the first to vote. Despite efforts by national Democrats to overhaul the nominating calendar, New Hampshire remains committed to its tradition and state law.
“New Hampshire has a tradition, and New Hampshire has a law, and both the tradition and the law were going to be followed no matter what,” Secretary of State David Scanlan said. “In today’s society, it seems that we are quick to eliminate traditions and ignore them. But I would like to think that 100 years from now, the people of this country will really be glad that we kept this one.”
The Republican primaries will kick off with the Iowa caucus on January 15, 2024. Eight days later, New Hampshire’s primary will provide a crucial opportunity for GOP candidates to prove their competitiveness against former President Donald Trump, who is currently the front-runner for the party’s nomination. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has strategically placed New Hampshire at the center of his campaign.
On the Democratic side, Iowa’s caucus will also take place on January 15, 2024. However, the presidential results will not be immediately released to comply with new party rules advocated by President Joe Biden, who believes that states with a larger minority population should have priority.
“At what point does a state become too old, or too wealthy, or too educated, or too religious to hold an early primary?” Scanlan questioned, criticizing the use of race as a means to rearrange the nominating calendar.
The Democratic National Committee has approved a new calendar that includes a primary in South Carolina on February 3, 2024, followed by Nevada three days later. Michigan has also been moved to the group of early states voting before Super Tuesday on March 5, 2024.
Will Biden be the Democratic nominee in 2024?
There will be 24 Republicans and 21 Democrats on the New Hampshire ballot. Notably, Biden will not appear on the ballot and has no plans to campaign in the state. However, some of the state’s top Democrats are organizing a write-in campaign to support his re-election bid.
The Republican field has started to consolidate after the exits of former Vice President Mike Pence and South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott. Candidates such as Christie, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy are competing to become the main opponent to Trump.
