New CDC director vows to regain lost trust by focusing on ‘building trust’.
New CDC Director Aims to Rebuild Public Trust
Newly appointed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Mandy Cohen is on a mission to regain the public’s trust. In her first all-hands meeting as the head of the CDC, Cohen emphasized the importance of trust during a recent interview with NBC News.
“We want to protect the health of every American. We have to first make sure that we are building trust with the American people,” Cohen stated. “And I know some of that trust was lost in the last few years, but I’m here to refocus the organization on building that trust.”
Criticism and Challenges
Meanwhile, the CDC has faced criticism from 2024 presidential candidates on both sides. Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) referred to the “bankruptcy of the public health establishment,” while environmental lawyer Robert F. Kennedy Jr. called the CDC a “captive agency.”
Cohen acknowledges the need for a collective effort to rebuild trust. “Well, first, it starts with the whole team at CDC. Trust is not just built with me doing something different. It’s all of us being different,” she explained.
President Joe Biden appointed Cohen as director following her successful tenure as the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services secretary.
Low Trust and Political Influence
A survey conducted by Health Affairs last year revealed that almost a fifth of respondents expressed low trust in the CDC. Within this group, 74% cited political influence on CDC recommendations and policies as the primary reason for their lack of trust.
Rebuilding trust is a top priority for Director Mandy Cohen as she leads the CDC into the future.
