The Republican Presidential Candidates Support Mike Pence’s Actions on January 6th
The Republican presidential candidates who participated in the first primary debate on Wednesday night overwhelmingly expressed their support for former Vice President Mike Pence’s actions on January 6, 2021.
During the debate, moderator Martha MacCallum asked Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) if Pence did the right thing when he certified the results of the 2020 presidential election amidst the chaos at the U.S. Capitol.
Sen. Tim Scott:
“Absolutely, he did the right thing,” Scott confidently responded, earning applause from the crowd. “We should be asking ourselves a bigger question about the weaponization of the DOJ.”
MacCallum then posed the same question to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who took a different approach by emphasizing the importance of looking forward rather than dwelling on the past. He pledged to end the weaponization of the federal government and redirected the conversation to the upcoming 2024 election.
Gov. Ron DeSantis:
“The 2024 election is not about what happened on January 6,” DeSantis asserted. ”It’s about who gets sworn into office on January 20, 2025. I have no problem with Mike Pence; he did his duty on that day.”
Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley also voiced her support for Pence’s actions.
Nikki Haley:
“I do think he did the right thing,” Haley affirmed. “We need to give him credit for that.”

Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who served in the Trump administration, commended Pence for his unwavering commitment to the Constitution.
Chris Christie:
“Mike Pence stood for the Constitution, and he deserves our thanks as Americans for putting his oath of office and the Constitution of the United States before personal, political, and unfair pressure,” Christie praised.
“We must address the issue of those who would suspend the Constitution for their own political gain,” he added. “Mike Pence said no, and he deserves credit.”
Pharmaceutical executive Vivek Ramaswamy, who praised Pence in his book for his actions on January 6, chose not to directly answer the question during the debate.
