80% of Blue State residents support parental notification for student gender identity changes.
Nearly Four in Five New Jersey Residents Support Parental Notification for Students’ Gender Identity
A recent poll conducted by Monmouth University reveals that an overwhelming 77% of adults in New Jersey, along with 81% of parents of minors, believe that schools should inform parents if their child expresses a desire to be identified by a different gender. This sentiment is shared across the political spectrum, with 92% of Republicans and 61% of Democrats supporting parental notification requirements for middle and high schools.
The survey, which included 814 New Jersey residents, also found that 55% of respondents believe parents should be informed of their child’s gender identity change, even if it is not mandatory for schools to do so. Among parents, this number rises to 59%. Interestingly, when asked about the amount of gender identity education in schools, nearly half of the respondents felt that schools were teaching too much, while only 23% believed the amount was appropriate, and 16% thought there was not enough.
However, the poll comes in the wake of a recent decision by a New Jersey state judge, who blocked three school districts from enforcing a policy that required parental notification in cases of gender identity changes. The judge argued that the policy could disproportionately impact transgender, gender nonconforming, and nonbinary youth.
The policy itself, which was approved by three New Jersey school districts, mandates that schools inform parents if their child requests a change in gender identity, including pronouns, name, bathroom usage, or participation in sports teams of the opposite sex. Exceptions are made in cases where notifying parents could potentially harm the student.
