NEA training warns educators about GOP’s ‘racist dog whistles’
The National Education Association (NEA), the largest teachers union in the U.S., is preparing to hold a training called “Advancing LGBTQ+ Justice and Transgender Advocacy,” which has drawn criticism after internal documents were leaked. The materials reveal a strongly partisan and ideologically driven agenda that includes criticizing Republicans for using “racist dog whistles” and “transphobic tropes” while promoting transgender advocacy and progressive messaging. The training will instruct educators on how to use “race, class, and gender narratives” and accuse opponents of strategic racism and transphobia.
The documents also provide practical guides on gender transition processes in schools, including sample transition plans and workplace policies, and encourage educators to adopt inclusive language such as using “genders” and incorporating pronouns visibly.
critics, including the watchdog group Defending Education, argue that the union is prioritizing political activism over addressing pressing educational challenges like declining student reading levels, rising absenteeism, and increasing behavioral issues in classrooms. They contend that the NEA should focus on core educational goals rather than engaging in partisan politics and social justice training. Defending Education representatives have accused the NEA leadership of moving away from its foundational mission to improve education, instead turning the union into a platform for far-left political advocacy.
Top teachers union warns educators about Republicans’ ‘arsenal of racist dog whistles’ and ‘transphobic tropes’
Newly released internal documents from an upcoming National Education Association training uncovered ideologically driven and openly partisan materials used to disparage Republicans, advance transgender advocacy, and “mobilize our progressive base.”
The documents, obtained by Defending Education and reviewed by the Washington Examiner, accuse Republicans of using “racist dog whistles” and “transphobic tropes.”
“The right has exploited ignorance about transgender people… to advance anti-trans attacks,” one document reads. “Republicans in state legislatures have increasingly turned to anti-transgender rhetoric and legislation as a powerful complement to their arsenal of racist dog whistles… they have paired these attacks with fear-mongering about Critical Race Theory, mobilizing their base with a potent mix of racist and transphobic tropes.”
“Our appeals on any topic will always be filtered through the noise of this unrelenting fear-mongering and scapegoating on the right,” the document continues.
The teachers union is set to host the “Advancing LGBTQ+ Justice and Transgender Advocacy” training from Dec. 2-4.
The materials show NEA plans to train its attendees on how to deploy “race, class, and gender narratives,” and will instruct participants to accuse opponents of deploying “strategic racism and transphobia.”
Other materials include full gender-transition guides for adults in school settings, including sample transition plans, a workplace transition process, and sample transition-announcement emails for educators to implement in schools and district environments.
The NEA will additionally instruct educators to “pluralize” gender and swap the word “gender” with “our genders” or “genders.” The NEA argued that this new adoption of “genders” will “activate more expansive attitudes.”
Participants are also advised to add pronouns everywhere, including purchasing pronoun pins if they are unable to change their ID badges.
Defending Education is sounding the alarm about the priorities of the nation’s largest teachers’ union, characterizing the training as a departure from the goals of educating students at a time when standardized test scores are falling.
Recent reports from the Department of Education have found that approximately two-thirds of students are behind the reading level standard, chronic absenteeism has soared, and classroom behavior challenges have reached historic highs. Defending Education believes solving these issues should be given priority by the teachers union instead of engaging in partisan politics.
“Their [NEA] federal charter was granted because they promised to elevate the character and advance the interests of the profession of teaching; and to promote the cause of education in the United States,” Senior Director of Communications for Defending Education Erika Sanzi told the Washington Examiner in a joint statement.
“Seeing as their leadership — and by extension, the organization itself — has morphed into a far-left insane asylum that is actively destroying the cause of education, that charter is no longer defensible,” Sanzi added.
OPINION: MARYLAND SCHOOLS FORCE GENDER IDEOLOGY ON SEVENTH GRADERS
Kendall Tietz, the organization’s investigative reporter, told the Washington Examiner in the joint statement that the union’s “priorities are unmistakable.”
“A teacher’s job is to teach facts and skills, not train kids to be social justice activists, said in the joint statement,“ she added.
