NBC Kicks Journalist to the Curb After She’s Arrested
NBC Terminates Relationship with Freelance Reporter Arrested for Inciting Terrorism
NBC News has cut ties with a freelance reporter after she was arrested by Israeli authorities on charges related to inciting terrorism and supporting a terrorist organization. The reporter, Marwat Azza, had been working for NBC as a freelance producer, but the network claims they were unaware of her controversial social media activity that led to the investigation.
According to NBC, the material under investigation is not related to any work she did for the network. However, an unnamed source at NBC stated that they had reviewed Azza’s work and found nothing concerning. Azza has been working as a freelance journalist since 2018, according to her LinkedIn profile.
The 45-year-old reporter was taken into custody after turning herself in to the police. She had been wanted for questioning since last month due to her pro-Hamas posts on Facebook. Israeli newspaper Haaretz described Azza as a Palestinian residing in East Jerusalem and reported that she had praised Hamas on her social media while Israeli citizens were being attacked.
Posts on Azza’s Facebook page depicted the ongoing conflict as a film with Hamas militants as the stars. In one post, she wrote, “I feel like I’m watching a movie where the director is Palestinian and the protagonists are from Gaza.” Police confirmed that Azza cooperated with them and admitted to authoring the controversial posts.
The spokesperson for the police in Jerusalem called the offenses “very serious” and criticized Azza for inciting and glorifying acts of violence against civilians. Despite her attorney’s request for her release, a judge ordered her to be confined for at least four additional days.

How can media organizations ensure that their vetting processes are thorough enough to identify potentially problematic social media activity by prospective employees?
.
The termination of Azza’s relationship with NBC follows a wave of backlash and criticism aimed at the network for allowing her to work despite her social media activity. Many argue that NBC should have conducted a more thorough background check and vetting process before hiring Azza as a freelance reporter.
While NBC claims that Azza’s controversial posts are unrelated to her work for the network, the incident raises questions about the responsibility and accountability of media organizations when it comes to the actions of their employees. In today’s digital age, where social media presence plays a significant role in shaping public perception, journalists and reporters need to be cautious of the content they share online.
By associating with a journalist who openly supports a terrorist organization and incites violence, NBC risks damaging its credibility and reputation. The network’s decision to terminate its relationship with Azza demonstrates its commitment to maintaining ethical standards and distancing itself from individuals involved in activities that undermine peace and stability.
It is important to note that freedom of speech and expression are fundamental rights, but they come with responsibilities. Journalists, as purveyors of information, have a responsibility to provide accurate and unbiased reporting. Inciting terrorism and supporting terrorist organizations not only violate ethical guidelines but also perpetuate hatred and contribute to a cycle of violence.
The incident involving Azza also highlights the delicate balance that media organizations must strike between respecting employees’ private lives and safeguarding the interests and values of the organization. While employees are entitled to personal opinions and beliefs, it is crucial for media organizations to ensure that these views do not compromise the integrity of their journalism.
In conclusion, NBC’s decision to terminate its relationship with freelance reporter Marwat Azza sends a clear message that the network will not tolerate individuals who incite terrorism and support terrorist organizations. The incident serves as a reminder to media organizations of the importance of thorough vetting processes and monitoring employees’ social media activities. Upholding ethical standards and promoting responsible journalism is crucial in maintaining trust and credibility with audiences.
