Navy removes commander of Japan-based destroyer USS Howard.
The Navy Relieves Commander of USS Howard
The Navy made the decision to relieve Cmdr. Kenji Igawa of his responsibilities as the commander of the USS Howard on Saturday. This action was taken due to a loss of confidence in his leadership.
Vice Adm. Karl Thomas, the commander of the U.S. 7th Fleet, based in the Pacific region, has administratively reassigned Igawa to the staff of commander, U.S. 7th Fleet.
Temporary Replacement
Capt. Edward Angelinas, former commanding officer of USS Robert Smalls, will temporarily fill the vacancy left by Igawa’s demotion. The Navy has not yet announced who will be the permanent replacement.
“Navy commanding officers are held to high standards of personal and professional conduct,” the Navy stated. “They are expected to uphold the highest standards of responsibility, reliability, and leadership, and the Navy holds them accountable when they fall short of those standards.”
The Navy’s statement did not provide specific details on what led to the decision to relieve Igawa of his command.
Cmdr. Kenji Igawa’s Background
Igawa graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2004 with a degree in electrical engineering. Prior to his role as commander of the USS Howard, he held various positions, including combat systems officer and weapons officer aboard USS Princeton, assistant damage control assistant and repair division officer aboard USS Tarawa, and communications officer aboard USS Stethem.
