NATO welcomes new member state
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Welcomes Sweden as its Newest Member
In a historic move, Sweden has officially joined NATO, becoming the 32nd country to join the alliance. This significant development comes two years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which sparked the largest war on European soil since World War II.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This is a historic day. Sweden will now take its rightful place at NATO’s table, with an equal say in shaping NATO policies and decisions. After over 200 years of non-alignment, Sweden now enjoys the protection granted under Article 5, the ultimate guarantee of Allies’ freedom and security.”
Ensuring Member States’ Security
Article 5 of the NATO treaty ensures that member states are protected from attacks by requiring all members to come to the aid of any country that is attacked. This provision has only been activated once, following the terrorist attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001.
Stoltenberg emphasized the benefits of Sweden’s accession, stating, ”Sweden brings with it capable armed forces and a first-class defense industry. Sweden’s accession makes NATO stronger, Sweden safer, and the whole Alliance more secure. Today’s accession demonstrates that NATO’s door remains open, and that every nation has the right to choose its own path.”
This momentous occasion marks the end of Sweden’s nearly 80-year era of neutrality since World War II.
