Native American group demands team name change back to Redskins, threatens boycott.
A Native American Group Urges Washington Commanders to Change Team Name Back to Redskins, Threatens Boycott
A Native American advocacy group has issued a strong demand to the NFL’s Washington Commanders, urging them to change their name back to the “Washington Redskins.” The group, known as the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA), has threatened to launch a nationwide boycott similar to the Bud Light boycott if their request is ignored.
Eunice Davidson, the founder and president of NAGA, sent a sternly worded letter to the team’s new owners and key leadership, including managing partner Josh Harris, team president Jason Wright, head coach Ron Rivera, and 14 limited partners. In the letter, Davidson emphasized the team’s unique position as the NFL franchise representing the nation’s capital and urged them to recognize the history and value of the American Indian.
“At this moment in history, we are formally requesting that the team revitalize its relationship with the American Indian community by (i) changing the name back to ‘The Redskins,’ which recognizes America’s original inhabitants and (ii) using the team’s historic name and legacy to encourage Americans to learn about, not cancel, the history of America’s tribes and our role in the founding of this Great Nation.”
If the demand for the name change is not met, NAGA threatened to initiate a nationwide boycott similar to the Bud Light boycott, which resulted in significant financial losses for the company. Davidson made it clear that NAGA is prepared to take action to ensure their voices are heard.

NAGA’s objection to the name change stems from the belief that it erases the longstanding association the Native American community had with the three-time Super Bowl champions. Davidson highlighted the positive relationship the Redskins had with the American Indian community since their founding in 1932 and emphasized that the term “Redskins” was not racist or offensive.
The group argued that having a prominent championship NFL team use a name that honors Native Americans is a source of pride and should be celebrated. They expressed their passionate support for the Washington Redskins and urged the team to reconsider the recent name change to the Commanders.
In 2020, the Washington franchise, then owned by Daniel Snyder, decided to change its name due to pressure from left-wing groups who claimed it was racist and offensive. The team unveiled its new name, the Commanders, in February 2022. However, NAGA, along with many longtime fans, objected to the name change and launched an online petition to bring back the Washington Redskins.
The petition, which has garnered over 79,000 signatures, emphasizes the cultural, historical, and emotional significance of the name “Redskins” and argues that it was never intended to be derogatory or offensive. NAGA believes that there are alternative ways to honor and respect Native American heritage without erasing it.
We are now officially over 𝟕𝟕,𝟎𝟎𝟎 signatures! Curious how we got here?

With the growing support for their cause, NAGA hopes that their efforts will lead to a reconsideration of the name change and send a message to those who try to dictate what minorities should find offensive. The petition’s success demonstrates the passion and dedication of fans who believe that restoring the Redskins name is the right decision for the team, its loyal fanbase, and the legacy it represents.
