Native American group fights against ‘fake group’ accusations while advocating for Washington Commanders’ name change.
The Fight to Restore the Washington Commanders’ Previous Name
The Native American group advocating for the Washington Commanders to revert to their previous name has vehemently denied accusations of being “fake.” The group’s president, Eunice Davidson, proudly identifies themselves as “tribal-enrolled members.”
This denial comes in response to a text message sent by Matthew Laux, a sales manager for the Commanders, who claimed that the group was not genuine. Laux was discussing a petition created by the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA), urging the team to reclaim its former title, the Washington Redskins, a name they abandoned in 2020.
Standing Strong Against Accusations
“We’re not a fake group,” stated Davidson in an interview. “We’re tribal-enrolled members from tribes across the United States.” Davidson also expressed that the movement to change the team’s name was driven by “racist white woke” college professors and that the group has faced accusations of being ”fake” in the past.
“They never tell our story, and that’s their goal,” Davidson continued. “To wipe out Native history. It’s discrimination when you go after one culture like this.”
Despite the skepticism from the Commanders’ sales manager, it is important to note that his personal opinion does not reflect the organization’s stance. A spokesperson for the Commanders clarified that Laux does not speak on behalf of the team.
A Growing Movement
The NAGA’s petition, posted online in June, has garnered over 128,000 signatures as of Tuesday morning. Once it reaches its next milestone of 150,000 signatures, it will become one of the most signed petitions on Change.org.
In an effort to pressure the Commanders, NAGA has threatened a boycott similar to the one faced by Anheuser-Busch. The beer company reported a significant loss of nearly $400 million in the second quarter of this year, which many attribute to a boycott following a partnership with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney.
NAGA’s letter, signed by Davidson, highlights a poll revealing that 90% of Native Americans do not find the Redskins name offensive. The group also points out that other sports teams, such as the Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Blackhawks, have retained their Native American-inspired names while acknowledging the importance of honoring and respecting Native culture.
Last month, Earvin “Magic” Johnson, one of the Commanders’ co-owners, hinted at the possibility of another name change for the team, potentially taking effect as early as next year. This development follows billionaire Josh Harris’ acquisition of the Washington Commanders for over $6 billion earlier this year.
