Largest teachers union suggests reading ‘Gender Queer’ and ‘White Fragility’ this summer.

The NEA’s Controversial Summer Reading List

The nation’s largest teachers union, the National Education Association (NEA), has stirred up controversy with its recommended summer reading list for educators. The list includes two highly debated books: “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo and “Gender Queer” by Maia Kobabe.

“White Fragility” delves into the difficulties White people face when discussing racism, according to the NEA’s commentary. On the other hand, “Gender Queer” is a sexually explicit graphic novel that has sparked outrage among parents across the country.

Despite its controversial nature, “Gender Queer” was the most challenged book in the country, as reported by the American Library Association’s annual report on banned books. Interestingly, the NEA’s list categorizes “Gender Queer” under the “banned books” section.

Furthermore, the NEA’s recommended reading list includes “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” a memoir by an LGBT activist, and books to “celebrate or understand” Juneteenth.

Controversial Choices

Parents have expressed their concerns about the availability of “Gender Queer” in school libraries, demanding its removal. The sexually explicit content depicted in the book has raised eyebrows and ignited debates about appropriate material for children.

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin (R) criticized the NEA’s recommendations, highlighting the union’s previous controversial stances. He emphasized the importance of parental rights in education and questioned the authority of the NEA in determining what books children should read.

In the past, the NEA has supported teaching gender ideology in K-12 schools and advocated for hiding students’ gender identities from parents, drawing criticism from conservative groups.

NEA’s Influence

The NEA’s influence extends beyond recommended reading lists. The union has actively engaged with social media platforms, urging them to combat misinformation about racism in classrooms. They have also addressed the issue of mask-wearing during the COVID-19 pandemic, condemning those who view it as an infringement on personal liberty.

While the NEA’s recommendations may spark controversy, they continue to shape the educational landscape and influence discussions on important topics.
