Pharmacies across the country are facing delays in fulfilling prescription orders due to a massive cyberattack targeting one of the largest healthcare companies in the United States.
Change Healthcare, a company responsible for processing orders and patient payments nationwide, discovered a “cyber security issue” affecting its networks on the East Coast on Wednesday morning.
“Change Healthcare is currently experiencing a network interruption caused by a cyber security issue. Our experts are actively working to address the matter. As soon as we became aware of the external threat, we took immediate action to disconnect our systems in order to prevent further impact,” stated Change Healthcare.
Other pharmacies across the country have also reported disruptions in their operations due to the attack on Change Healthcare.
“We are currently experiencing a temporary pharmacy outage at the 22nd Medical Group. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your patience as we work diligently to resolve the issue. Our team is focused on restoring complete pharmacy services as soon as possible,” read a statement from the 22nd Medical Group, a medical center based around McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas.
“The estimated timeframe for resolving this issue is tomorrow or later. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on our progress,” added the statement.
Furthermore, there is currently no publicly available information regarding the nature or origin of the cyber security issue affecting Change Healthcare.
“There is a nationwide outage affecting some of the largest prescription processors in North America,” stated Michigan-based Canadian Lakes Pharmacy on social media.
“While we can receive your prescriptions, we are unable to bill most insurance plans. If you can wait a day or so to pick up your prescription, that would be greatly appreciated. If you need it urgently, we will do our best to accommodate your needs,” mentioned Knight’s Pharmacy in Berea, Kentucky.
“Unfortunately, this is a national outage beyond our control. We hope that the situation will be resolved soon. We will prioritize filling our backlog of prescriptions as quickly as possible once the system is available. We have not been given an estimated timeframe for service restoration. Thank you for your patience,” added Knight’s Pharmacy.
“We are aware that Change Healthcare is experiencing a network interruption that is impacting certain business operations, as well as the operations of other companies nationally,” stated a spokesperson. “There is no indication that CVS Health’s systems have been compromised.”
In addition, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton in California announced that “all Camp Pendleton and associated pharmacies are unable to process any prescription claims.”
“At this time, we can only assist patients with emergency and urgent prescriptions from hospital providers,” the hospital posted.
