NASA sent an incorrect command to Voyager 2. Deep Space Array will now bombard its position in a long-shot attempt to fix the issue.
NASA Races Against Time to Restore Contact with Voyager 2
NASA is on high alert as it desperately tries to regain contact with Voyager 2, the spacecraft currently billions of miles away in interstellar space.
Recently, a critical mistake by flight controllers caused Voyager 2 to lose communication with Earth. A long-shot attempt to fix the issue.”>wrong command inadvertently tilted the spacecraft’s antenna away from our planet, resulting in a loss of contact. Although the antenna only shifted by a mere 2 percent, it was enough to sever communications.
Despite the slim chances of success, NASA has deployed its massive dish antenna in Canberra, Australia, to scan for any faint signals from Voyager 2. The spacecraft is currently over 12 billion miles away, meaning it takes more than 18 hours for a signal to travel that distance.
In a bold move, NASA’s Deep Space Network plans to bombard Voyager 2’s vicinity with the correct command in the hopes of reestablishing communication. This operation will be carried out in the coming week, according to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which oversees the Voyager missions.
If this attempt fails, NASA will have to wait until October for an automatic spacecraft reset that is expected to restore communication.
Launched in 1977, Voyager 2 was designed to explore the outer planets, closely followed by its twin, Voyager 1. While Voyager 2 is currently out of touch, Voyager 1 remains in contact with Earth and holds the record as humanity’s most distant spacecraft, nearly 15 billion miles away.
