Nancy Pelosi says she will still have political ‘influence’ after retiring
Nancy Pelosi says she will still wield political influence after retirement, indicating she plans to help Democrats in the 2028 presidential race even though she won’t seek reelection in 2026. Her term ends in January 2027, and she stressed the importance of winning the White House as well as the House and Senate next time. While she did not outline concrete post-office activities, Pelosi suggested she may endorse or back democratic candidates in 2028. She hinted she would support her friend Gavin Newsom if he runs, while noting many other potential candidates—Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, Josh Shapiro, Andy beshear, and Mark Kelly—are among those discussed for the race. Pelosi also indicated the choice of the Democratic nominee will depend on who ultimately runs, and she spoke positively about Newsom as a potential president.
Nancy Pelosi says she will still have political ‘influence’ after retiring
House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said she will still have political “influence” after she retires, highlighting that she has “plans” and alluding to possible endorsements in the 2028 presidential election.
Pelosi, who became the first woman speaker of the House, announced in November she would not seek reelection after her term ends in January 2027. Pelosi discussed the power she had through the speakership, and while she’ll no longer have it after leaving office, she’ll remain active in politics.
“Well, I have plans, and we’ll have to win the White House, and there will be a primary election for all that,” Pelosi told Spectrum News on Wednesday. “While I won’t have power, I will have influence, and it’s really important that we win the House, Senate, and the White House. Win it all next time.”
Pelosi did not share what her plans were, but suggested she wants to help elect Democrats in the 2028 elections.
While numerous Democrats have revealed they are considering running for president in 2028, none have announced their bids.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA), Gov. Andy Beshear (D-KY), and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) are among the Democrats speculated to run.
Pelosi hinted that she would support her “friend” Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) if he decided to run, but said the other potential candidates are “spectacular.”
“It’ll be a question of who [the Democratic presidential candidate] is,” Pelosi said. “We have our own governor who may run, I don’t know. He hasn’t asked me for his support. If he did, he’s my friend, but I have great respect for all the other candidates.”
Pelosi spoke highly about a possible Newsom White House campaign at the Munich Security Conference earlier this month, saying he would be a “great” president.

During the interview with Spectrum News, Pelosi was pressed on comments she made indicating her early support of Newsom for 2028.
“He hasn’t asked [for my support], so if somebody is running, I don’t know,” she said. “We’ll see.”
