Nancy Mace says she would support ‘chemtrail’ ban as South Carolina governor
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) dabbled in conspiracy theories days after beginning her run for governor, pledging to support a “chemtrail” ban if elected.
Mace made the remark largely unprompted, responding to an audience member who asked if she would remove fluoride from the water supply if elected.
“I would support any action to remove fluoride from our water and also ban chemtrails,” she said.
Mace claimed that other states, including Tennessee and Florida, had already banned chemtrails.
“We will follow. Again, I want us to lead; I don’t want to be following. But if we have to follow other states until we get there, we will do it,” she added.
Mace appeared to be referring to a ban on geoengineering and weather modification technology in Florida and Tennessee, which is different from chemtrails, a conspiracy theory holding that condensation trails from high-flying aircraft are actually chemical or biological agents being released for nefarious use.
The legislation in Tennessee was targeted against a hypothetical solution to climate change in which aerosols would be deployed to block out some of the sun’s rays.
The bill “prohibits the intentional injection, release, or dispersion, by any means, of chemicals, chemical compounds, substances, or apparatus within the borders of this state into the atmosphere with the express purpose of affecting temperature, weather, or the intensity of the sunlight.”
Earlier this year, Florida passed Senate Bill 56, which makes it illegal for individuals to practice weather modification or geoengineering and imposes a $100,000 fine and a five-year prison sentence for violators. This was mainly prompted by cloud seeding, a limited weather modification technology that allows planes to dissipate some individual clouds early. The practice has triggered fears and conspiracy theories, such as that cloud seeding contributed to this summer’s deadly flash floods in Texas.
MACE ANNOUNCES CAMPAIGN FOR SOUTH CAROLINA GOVERNOR
Mace appears to be referring to a different phenomenon, with conspiracy theories around chemtrails circulating since the 1990s. While some major lawmakers have commented on weather modification, none have pledged to ban chemtrails as Mace suggested on Wednesday.
Mace announced her decision to run in the 2026 South Carolina gubernatorial race at her alma mater, The Citadel, in Charleston on Monday.
