N.C. State distributed condoms to new students, sparking parental protests.
North Carolina State University Offers Incoming Students “Sex Kits”
North Carolina State University made headlines when they provided incoming students with a unique welcome packet. This packet included condoms, lubricant, and even a paper encouraging students to keep track of their “orgasms.”
However, after receiving complaints from concerned parents, the university decided to discontinue the distribution of these packets.
Controversy and Questions
The news sparked a heated discussion on social media. One commenter on Facebook questioned the university’s decision, asking why they were handing out these “sex kits” to students.
In response, the university explained that they partnered with CVS to provide incoming students with essential items for campus life, including healthy snacks, home care products, and self-care aids. However, they acknowledged that a questionable flyer from a condom manufacturer was included in the packets and assured that distribution had been halted.
The commenter wasn’t satisfied with the explanation and fired back, questioning whether worksheets promoting threesomes and sexual activities could be considered as home care.
The Controversial Flyer
According to Campus Reform, the condom flyer included in the packets featured a game called S.M.A.S.H., which aimed to educate students about sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The game involved eliminating items from a list, and the last remaining item in each category would supposedly provide insight into their next sexual experience, including the number of orgasms.
Boston College’s Approach
In contrast, Boston College, a Catholic institution, has a different approach to sexual health. Boston College Students for Sexual Health, an independent group not affiliated with the school but funded by Planned Parenthood, distributes “condomgrams” on Valentine’s Day. In a student vote, 94% supported the distribution of contraceptives on campus.
However, Boston College’s policy emphasizes the importance of respecting the institution’s values and traditions as a Jesuit, Catholic school. Any incidents of sexual activity outside of marriage may be referred to the Student Conduct System.
